Innovation isn't easy. It's a journey filled with commercial, practical and engineering challenges, so when our collaboration partners at Vanguard STS launched their HydoShunter at the Severn Valley Railway in February 2026, we were delighted to celebrate this important milestone with them. HydroShunter is an engineering solution which re-uses the structure and drivetrain of proven locomotives, but introduces a clean and flexible hydrogen/battery power source.
While Vanguard STS has led the development, Enspired has been proud to support that journey behind the scenes. Enspired provided project director strategic advice through the development, design, build and test phases, and also practical guidance on the crucial safety management approach for the locomotive. This built on our expertise from other hydrogen projects and our pragmatic approach to rail vehicle engineering issues to support the design review process and controlling change management throughout the build.
HydroShunter is a step on a bigger journey toward decarbonisation and a more sustainable railway. We’re proud to have supported Vanguard STS on this project and look forward to what comes next."
